Boscombe Beach: A Complete Guide

Boscombe has always felt a bit different from the beaches near the centre. It is a working seaside neighbourhood with a pier, a surf scene and a run of cafes that stay busy long after the summer crowds thin out. Boscombe beach rewards anyone willing to walk a little further east than the main drag.

The pier and the surf reef

The pier is the heart of it. Shorter and plainer than its neighbour at Bournemouth, it has a laid-back feel, and the walk to the end gives you the best view back over the whole bay. Just offshore sits the reef, built to sharpen the waves for surfers. It does not turn Boscombe into Cornwall, and plenty of days are flat, but on the right swell and wind you will see boards in the water and a knot of people watching from the sand.

Surfing and watersports

If you want to try it yourself, look for the hire and lesson operators clustered near the pier during the season. Boards, wetsuits and paddleboards are usually available to rent, and beginners' sessions run through the warmer months. Even on calm days the sheltered water suits paddleboarding and kayaking. Always check the flags and keep clear of the swimming zones, and remember that offshore winds can push you further out than you think.

Sand, huts and the seafront

The beach itself is classic Bournemouth: clean golden sand backed by a promenade and a line of colourful beach huts running along the low cliff. The sand shelves gently, which makes it a sensible choice for families with young children, and the flat prom is easy going for buggies and bikes. In summer the main beach is patrolled, so swim between the flags and keep an eye on little ones near the water.

The beach huts are a Boscombe institution. Some are privately owned and others can be hired by the day or week through the council, which is worth doing if you want a base with a kettle and somewhere to stash bags out of the wind.

Cafes and the neighbourhood behind

Part of Boscombe's appeal is that the food does not stop at ice cream. Urban Reef, right by the pier, is the best-known spot for a proper sit-down meal with a sea view, and it draws a crowd for weekend breakfasts. Along the prom you will find the usual kiosks for coffee, chips and cones.

Getting there

Boscombe is easy to reach without a car. Buses run along the seafront and through the centre of Boscombe itself, and the flat promenade connects you to the beaches on either side. If you do drive, the car parks near the pier approach and the overcliff spaces above fill quickly in summer, so aim to arrive early. Cycling in along the prom is often the least stressful option of all.
