Jurassic Coast Day Trips from Bournemouth

Bournemouth sits right at the eastern gateway to the Jurassic Coast, the long stretch of Dorset and Devon shoreline protected for its geology and its fossils. Some of the most famous scenery in England is within an easy day trip, and you can pick a single headline sight or string a few together.

Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove

These two sit close together and are the images most people picture. Durdle Door is the great natural limestone arch reaching out into the sea, reached by a steep path down from the clifftop car park. Lulworth Cove, a short walk away, is an almost perfect circle of water scooped out of the rock, calm and sheltered and good for a paddle. Both get very busy in summer, and the car parks fill early, so an early start or an out-of-season visit pays off. The walk between them is short but steep, so wear proper shoes and take your time on the descents.

Getting there

By car it is roughly an hour west in normal traffic, and the roads around Lulworth are narrow and slow when it is busy. In summer, seasonal boat trips run along the coast and let you see the arch from the water without the drive, though sailings depend on the weather and the tides, so check before you set your heart on one.

The Purbeck loop: Old Harry, Corfe and Swanage

Closer to home, the Isle of Purbeck packs three fine stops into one trip. Old Harry Rocks are the chalk stacks at the far tip of Studland, reached by a gentle clifftop walk with big views back towards the bay. Inland, Corfe Castle stands in dramatic ruin above its village, one of the most photographed spots in Dorset and a good place for a wander and a pub lunch. On the coast, Swanage is a proper seaside town with a sandy bay, a pier and a heritage steam railway that links it up towards Corfe.

You can reach Purbeck by car around the top of the harbour, or make an adventure of it with the small chain ferry that crosses the harbour mouth at Sandbanks towards Studland. From nearer Poole there are also seasonal boats and bus links worth checking. A steam train, a castle and a chalk-stack walk make an easy, varied day, especially with children.

Planning and safety

The Jurassic Coast is beautiful and, in places, genuinely hazardous, so a little planning goes a long way. The cliffs are actively eroding: rockfalls happen, so stay off the beaches directly beneath high cliffs and never climb them. Check the tide times before any beach walk, as some coves cut off as the water rises. Wear boots or sturdy shoes for the coast path, take water and a windproof layer, and keep dogs and children close to the inside of clifftop paths.
