Old Christchurch Road runs the length of Bournemouth town centre, from the Lansdowne down towards the Square, and it changes hands more often than most streets in Dorset. Beirut Lounge has been part of it since 1992, which in that context counts for a great deal. It is a family-run Lebanese restaurant built around a simple idea: order a lot of small plates, put them in the middle of the table, and settle in.
The food
The kitchen keeps things traditionally Lebanese, and the mezze list is the centre of gravity. There are more than 36 mezze dishes on offer, split between hot and cold, alongside roughly 18 main courses, and everything is prepared to order rather than sitting under a lamp. That means a meal here works best when a table orders collectively and grazes, in much the same spirit as a Mediterranean tapas evening, with dishes arriving in waves rather than in strict courses.
Two things make the menu unusually easy to plan around. All the meat is halal, and about half of the dishes are vegetarian, with vegan options among them. That is a genuinely useful split for a mixed group, since nobody ends up staring at a single token dish. The cooking is not especially fiery either, leaning on herbs, lemon, garlic, olive oil and slow-built flavour rather than heat, so it suits cautious eaters and adventurous ones equally well. The dining room is a proper sit-down room rather than a quick-turnaround canteen, and it is designed to be flexible: the restaurant regularly hands it over for private parties, receptions and corporate events. The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried, which is very much the point of a mezze meal, and it works as easily for a two-person dinner as it does for a birthday table of a dozen. Buses along Old Christchurch Road and around the Lansdowne stop close by, and the town centre car parks are the obvious option if you drive.
