Bistro on the Beach

A much-loved Southbourne seafront bistro, now closed — its beachfront spot is home to SoBo Beach while a new venue is planned.

For years, Bistro on the Beach was one of Southbourne’s best-known seafront addresses — a bistro tucked below the clifftop, right on the promenade, with sea views from every table. It closed its doors in autumn 2021, and the building was later demolished. Today the spot is occupied by SoBo Beach while a permanent redevelopment is planned, so this page is best read as a record of what stood here — and a pointer to where to eat on the beach now.

What happened to Bistro on the Beach

The bistro served its last covers on 31 October 2021, and the building — which had reached the end of its working life — was demolished the following winter as part of BCP Council’s plans for the Southbourne seafront. In its place, a temporary venue called SoBo Beach opened in spring 2022, and it has stayed put while a larger permanent scheme — a new restaurant with a takeaway kiosk, improved facilities and a row of beach lodges — works its way forward. Timescales for the permanent build have shifted more than once, so it’s worth checking BCP Council or the current operator for the latest.

The food it was known for

In its day, Bistro on the Beach leaned into its coastal setting. Seafood was the draw — fish and chips, calamari, crab and smoked salmon among the regular mentions — sitting alongside salads, meat dishes and a rotating handful of specials. Breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas were served through the day, with dinner on selected evenings over the warmer months, and there were vegetarian options and puddings such as lemon pie to finish. It was mid-range rather than fine dining: relaxed, generous cooking that suited a day by the sea.

The setting

The location did much of the work. Nestled at the foot of the slopes off Southbourne Coast Road, the bistro sat right on the promenade, so tables looked straight out across the water. It was fully licensed, welcomed dogs and families, and had an ice-cream and takeaway kiosk alongside for anyone who just wanted a cone or a snack to carry onto the sand. On a bright day, few seats along this stretch of coast were better placed.

Where it is — and what’s there now

You’ll find the site on Bournemouth Beach at Southbourne (BH6 4BE), reached down St Catherine’s Path or along the promenade, at the quieter, more local end of the seafront away from the busy central beaches. SoBo Beach now trades on the same footprint — a cluster of colourful container units, bars and outdoor seating right on the sand. Good to know

Because Bistro on the Beach has closed, there’s no menu, booking line or set of opening hours to check. If you’re heading down for food, look to SoBo Beach or the other cafés and kiosks along the Southbourne front, and keep an eye on BCP Council updates for news of the permanent venue to come.
