Bournemouth Natural Science Society and Museum

Bournemouth's independent natural history museum on Christchurch Road, free entry most Tuesdays, with Egyptology, geology and live creature encounters.

Tucked into a Victorian villa on Christchurch Road, the Bournemouth Natural Science Museum is one of the town's quieter cultural gems, a volunteer-run collection that has been introducing visitors to the natural world for over a century.

History

The museum belongs to the Bournemouth Natural Science Society (BNSS), a charity founded in 1903 to "promote study, interest and enjoyment in all branches of the Natural Sciences and History." The society has occupied the building since 1921, and in January 2016 the museum gained full Arts Council England accreditation, recognition of its collections and how they're cared for.

Collections

Inside, the displays range widely: birds, mammals, shells and marine life sit alongside minerals, fossils and insect cases, with dedicated sections for botany, geology and archaeology. The standout is the Egyptology gallery, home to a 2,500-year-old mummy in its sarcophagus. Some visits also offer the chance to handle live insects, spiders and snakes, a hit with younger visitors and the museum's Young Explorers programme.

Visiting

The museum opens to the public on most Tuesdays, 10am to 4pm (last entry 3.30pm), with extra dates during school holidays. Entry is free, though donations help the charity maintain the building and collections. There's free parking for around 25 cars on site, including disabled bays, and it's a short walk from Bournemouth's train and bus station. As a Victorian building, access is best on the ground floor via the chair-lift; upper floors and the basement involve stairs, so it's worth calling ahead if you have accessibility needs.

It's one of several museums worth seeking out beyond the seafront, pair a visit with the Russell-Cotes Museum nearby, or explore more of our guide to things to do in Bournemouth.
