Push through the door on Christchurch Road and you step into a room dressed head to toe in silent-film nostalgia: black-and-white portraits crowd the walls, framed newspaper cuttings hang between them, and the whole place hums with the promise of a night out. Chaplins has become shorthand for a proper evening in Boscombe. It is an alehouse, a cocktail bar, a restaurant and a music venue folded into one rambling building, and it wears its independence with pride.
The food
The kitchen leans on home cooking, with a menu that mixes British pub favourites and European-inspired plates, built where possible around locally sourced produce and rounded out with daily seasonal specials. Most of the sit-down eating happens in the upstairs Modern Times restaurant, a calmer counterpoint to the bar below, though there is a smokehouse leaning to the wider offer for anyone after slow-cooked meats. Kitchen hours are shorter than the bar and vary through the week, so it is worth checking the website before you arrive hungry.
Drink is where the venue has built its name. The bar keeps a rotating line-up of real ales and craft ciders, and each summer it throws a festival that lines up dozens of casks at once. Upstairs there is a proper cocktail menu, so whether you want a hand-pulled pint in the garden or something mixed and served over ice, both are covered.
The setting
The building is a warren rather than a single room, and that is the appeal. Upstairs sits Chaplins Bar itself and the Modern Times restaurant; downstairs the Cellar Bar is darker and closer to the stage, the place given over to live music. Newer additions such as the steampunk-styled Firehouse garden bar have added more corners to explore, and the ornate garden, strung with fairy-lights and dotted with vintage lampposts, comes into its own on warm Boscombe afternoons.
Programming runs seven nights a week and is not just bands. Live music takes the lead, with a Wednesday open mic from around nine giving newcomers the stage, and the calendar shifts constantly. Entry arrangements differ by event, so check ahead if you are coming specifically for a gig.
Where it is
You will find it at 529 Christchurch Road, BH1 4AG, on the main road running through Boscombe. The Royal Arcade, the high street and the O2 Academy are all a few minutes away on foot, and Boscombe Pier and the beach are roughly a five-minute walk downhill, which makes the bar an easy end point after an afternoon on the sand. Frequent buses along Christchurch Road link the venue to Bournemouth town centre in one direction and Christchurch in the other.
There is no car park attached to the venue. Nearby street parking and the public car parks around Boscombe are the usual options, though on a busy night the bus or a taxi saves the hunt for a space.

Areas and the restaurant can be reserved on request, and the venue works as an event space for private hire, so a call ahead is sensible for groups or celebrations.
