Compton Acres

Five themed gardens across ten acres above Poole Harbour, from a grand Italian terrace to an authentic Japanese garden and a rock-and-water valley.

Ten acres of hillside above Poole Harbour, divided into gardens that each pretend to be somewhere else entirely. You step off a formal Italian terrace, drop into a wooded valley, and a few minutes later you are standing beside a Japanese pond. Compton Acres has been doing this since 1920, and it still catches people out.

What to see and do

The estate is built around five themed gardens strung along a single circular route, so you can walk the whole thing without doubling back. The Grand Italian Garden is the showpiece: formal, symmetrical, terraced, and the part most visitors photograph first. From there the Wooded Valley takes the mood down several notches, all shade and canopy, before the Rock and Water Garden opens out into ponds, streams and alpine planting. The Heather Garden brings a moorland texture that feels a long way from the Dorset coast, and the Japanese Garden was built with genuine imported ornamentation rather than approximations.

The planting is the real substance. Thousands of species of trees, shrubs, bulbs and herbaceous plants are layered through the site, topped up each year with seasonal bedding, and there is a strong showing of subtropical and Southern Hemisphere material that thrives in the mild microclimate here. Come back in a different month and the place genuinely reads differently.

Beyond the gardens there is a plant centre with staff who know what they are selling, a gift shop, and an Italian delicatessen carrying pasta, oils, truffle products and wine. The cafe and tea room by the entrance handles breakfast, lunch, cakes, cream teas and full afternoon tea.

The setting

Compton Acres sits in Canford Cliffs, one of the leafiest corners of Poole, on ground that slopes towards the harbour. The original owner, Thomas Simpson, conceived it as a sequence of garden rooms illustrating styles from around the world, and that structure has survived. Since the early 2000s the site has been steadily restored and invested in, adding visitor facilities without flattening the character of the planting. The Italian Villa within the grounds now operates as a wedding and events venue overlooking the Italian Garden.

It is a quiet, unhurried sort of attraction. Allow a couple of hours if you want to actually look at things rather than march the loop.

Where it is

The gardens are on Canford Cliffs Road in Poole, signposted from the A338 and A35 and only minutes from Sandbanks. Free parking is provided on site, including accessible bays and coach drop-off. Morebus routes serve the area, and Parkstone station is around two miles away with Poole station a little further. Plenty of visitors combine a morning here with an afternoon on the beach, or with a wider wander around Poole.

Good to know

Buy tickets online ahead of your visit if you can, particularly on warm weekends. Annual passes exist for repeat visitors and come with discounts across the shops and cafe. Group and educational visits can be arranged in advance.

The route involves slopes and steps in places, so if access is a concern it is worth ringing ahead to talk through the practicalities before you travel. Opening times shift with the seasons, and the cafe keeps its own hours, so check the official website before setting off rather than assuming.
