Tucked into the heart of Christchurch, New Zealand Gardens is a small, unassuming public garden that carries an unusual story in its name. It sits right beside the better-known Druitt Gardens, within the town's Conservation Area, and makes a quiet stop on a walk between the High Street and Christchurch Priory.
Why "New Zealand"?
Christchurch, Dorset shares its name, and a sister-city relationship, with Christchurch, New Zealand, one of the town's several twin towns alongside Aalen in Germany, Saint-Lô in France and Tatabánya in Hungary. This modest garden was set aside to mark that connection, giving the town a small, tangible nod to its namesake on the other side of the world, tucked in among the everyday green spaces of the town centre rather than sign-posted as a major attraction.
Visiting
New Zealand Gardens is open access and free to visit, in keeping with the other small parks and gardens dotted around Christchurch town centre. There's no admission and no set opening hours, it's simply there to wander into as you pass. Facilities are minimal, so it's best treated as a brief, peaceful detour rather than a destination in its own right; if you want a longer stop, neighbouring Druitt Gardens has more to explore, including its wildlife pond and woodland paths.
