From the Savoy to The Nici: the Premium-Stay Push on Bournemouth’s West Cliff

Bournemouth built its first fortune on Victorian visitors who came for the air and stayed for the season. The modern version of that bet is visible along the West Cliff, where the town's hotel stock is being pushed steadily upmarket.

The clearest example is The Nici on West Hill Road. The former Savoy hotel was rebranded and relaunched in 2023 as a resort-style property, and now trades on more than 80 rooms, a 30-metre outdoor pool, a spa and two on-site restaurants. It is the kind of stay-put, pool-and-spa offer that seaside England mostly ceded to the Mediterranean decades ago, planted back on a Bournemouth clifftop.

The experience economy, seafront edition

The same logic runs down on the pier, where RockReef's PierZip sends riders 250 metres from the pier head back to the beach on the world's first pier-to-shore zip wire, a seasonal fixture that turns the town's most traditional structure into its most photographed thrill.

Together they sketch the direction of travel for the town's leisure economy: fewer faded seafronts cliches, more reasons to book the extra night. For a town whose economy still moves with the tourist season, that upmarket drift matters well beyond the hotel lobby.
