The Bournemouth Friday Fireworks go up at 10pm over the water just east of the pier, every Friday from 24 July to 28 August. Because the launch point sits on the town’s most walkable stretch of seafront, there are more good vantage points than any one crowd can fill. Here are the seven worth knowing, and who each one suits.
1. The beach east of the pier: closest to the action
The display launches from the seafront east of Bournemouth Pier, so the sand on that side puts the bursts almost directly overhead. This is the spot for maximum impact, the one children remember. Spread a rug, arrive by 9.15pm on fine nights, and expect company; it is the most popular patch for a reason.
2. The pier approach: the postcard view
Stand west of the launch point, around the pier approach, and you get the picture everyone wants: fireworks breaking beside the lit pier, doubled in the sea. It is the best photography position on the front, close to food and facilities, and the natural choice if you are coming down through the Lower Gardens from town.
3. Key West on the pier: the comfortable seat
The pier’s bar and restaurant sits out over the water, which on fireworks nights makes it a grandstand. In 2026 Key West’s fireworks evenings add free live music on 31 July, 14 August, 21 August and 28 August, with half-price fish and chips all day every Friday. Book a table ahead on display nights; watching the sky ignite from over the sea with a drink in hand is the format at its most civilised.
4. The East Cliff: height, space and the wide shot
Climb to the clifftop east of the pier and the display becomes a panorama: bursts over the bay, the pier lit below, the whole seafront glittering along the shore. The overcliff greens have room for chairs and picnic blankets, latecomers still find space at 9.55pm, and the walk down afterwards through the zig-zag paths beats sitting in traffic.
5. The West Cliff: the quieter classic
The West Cliff gives a similar elevated view from the other side, looking across the pier towards the launch area. It suits anyone staying in the West Cliff hotels, who can watch the display and be back in the bar before the crowds have folded their blankets.
6. Towards Boscombe: the local’s stroll
Walk east along the promenade and the crowd thins with every hundred metres while the fireworks stay in full view over the water. Anywhere along this stretch works, and Boscombe Pier itself offers a side-on view down the coast with easy parking behind it. This is the move for dogs who tolerate bangs, buggies that need space, and anyone allergic to crowds.
7. From the water
On calm evenings the bay fills with paddleboarders, kayakers and small boats holding position for the display. If you are experienced, equipped and honest about conditions, it is unforgettable; keep well clear of any exclusion area, wear a leash and buoyancy aid, and carry a light for the paddle back in the dark.
