The Bournemouth Friday Fireworks last a handful of minutes. The trick, as every local knows, is that the fireworks are the finale, not the event. Built around them properly, a free 10pm display becomes the spine of one of the easiest great evenings on the south coast. Here is the plan, in its several versions.
The classic: dinner, stroll, sky
Book a table for 7.30pm or 8pm within walking distance of the front. The candidates: the seafront strip itself, the town centre five minutes behind it, or Key West out on the pier, where Fridays mean half-price fish and chips all day and, on 31 July, 14 August, 21 August and 28 August, free live music running through the evening under the display.
Eat unhurried, settle up by 9.15pm, and walk down as the light goes. The half hour before the fireworks is quietly the best part: the bay turning navy, the pier lights coming on, the beach filling with rugs and expectation. The family version
Run the evening backwards. Beach from late afternoon, when the sand has cooled and emptied. Early dinner at 6pm, somewhere relaxed near the front. Then the promenade as entertainment until the display: the Lower Gardens aviary end, an ice cream, the pier walked end to end.
The 10pm start is the only hard part with small children, so frame it as the holiday one-off it is. Ear defenders for the noise-sensitive, a jumper each regardless of the day’s heat, and a viewing position with an easy exit, the east beach or the promenade, so tired legs can head straight home after the last burst. The date night
Two options, depending on temperament. Sociable: a booked table on Key West’s terrace on a live-music Friday, over the water, band playing, sky lighting up on schedule. Quieter: dinner in town, then up to the East Cliff, where the display becomes a panorama over the bay and the crowd thins to couples and photographers. Either way, route the walk home through the lit gardens. It has been doing the heavy lifting for Bournemouth romances since the Victorians.
The practical spine
However you dress the evening, the logistics are the same. The bus beats the car: services run late into the town centre, fares are cheap, and the 10.20pm exodus from the seafront car parks is the worst part of anyone’s night. Layers matter, because the sea breeze sharpens the moment the sun is gone, even in August. And displays are weather-dependent, so on a wild forecast check before you commit; with six Fridays in the series, from 24 July to 28 August, a postponed night is never the end of it.
